Last month, CREW Detroit hosted a second installment of our DEI Intentional Inclusion series at the Horatio Williams Foundation in Downtown Detroit. Please take a moment to read moderator Darlene Strickland’s major takeaways from that discussion.
“First of all, I’m incredibly honored that you trusted me to facilitate the “Intentional Inclusion” panel discussion. Most sincerely, thank you for the opportunity.
Secondly, the commitment and the work that CREW has shown in bringing this discussion forward should be commended. It is not an easy discussion to have, and it’s one that comes with a level fear and discomfort and uncertainty.
CREW’s willingness and bravery to create a space for the conversation about diversity, equity, engagement and inclusion speaks volumes to the integrity of the members.
This conversation is not a “one and done”. It MUST continue. If we are to grow our collective CI – Cultural Intelligence quotient, it has to continue.
All too often we think our single voice doesn’t matter, that it doesn’t make a difference in the vastness of an issue. That isn’t true. A single thought, a single moment of awareness, a single moment of bravery and boldness can start a wave of change that catches like wildfire. We can individually set the example. It starts with our focus and commitment to raising our awareness to the “level of respect being distributed in the room”, and to question – out loud, in the moment - if we’re operating at the highest level of human kindness and regard. I believe that the spark went off for many in that room.
CREW has set a phenomenal example – Well done.”
Thank you, Darlene for sharing your time and thoughts with CREW.
