Event Recap: Portraits & Pastries
Portraits & Pastries was an incredible experience from start to finish! Held at the historic Detroit Club, the venue was the perfect backdrop for connecting with fellow professionals in a relaxed and elegant atmosphere
The event featured thoughtfully organized stations, with customized headshots by Melissa Douglas Photography being a standout. Melissa’s personalized approach ensured that each participant received a high-quality, tailored headshot that truly reflected their unique style. Complementing this, the on-site hair, makeup, and image consulting services by House of Colour made everyone feel confident and polished, ready for their portraits
Another great aspect was the Networking Etiquette session hosted by the Detroit Academy of Etiquette. The presentation provided practical and insightful tips on how to navigate the modern business world with social graces. Some takeaway tips during this session included:
In virtual meetings, the first ten seconds sets the tone. Say hello as soon as you sign in or notice others enter the meeting if you are the host.
Where you sit during an in-person meeting matters, so choose your seat wisely as it impacts things like how much you speak, your relationship to those in the room, and people’s perception of you.
You have 7 seconds that give 7 first impressions:
Physical placement – avoid turning your back when you walk into a room
Facial control – if your mouth is slightly open, you seem friendly. If you have a consistently closed mouth, you seem less approachable
Personal presentation – dress the way you want to be addressed and match the formality of the conversation
Posture – having your chin too low can signify you are shy, but a chin held too high may seem arrogant
Voice – a fast past can seem nervous while a slow pace can be boring, find your sweet spot
Body language – utilize your hands, they can help signify comfort. When someone begins to mirror your body language, you’ve won their trust!
Charm – this is your “IT” factor that makes others want to get to know you more
Overall, Portraits & Pastries was an exceptional event, seamlessly blending learning, networking, professional development, and the opportunity to receive a polished, customized headshot, in a fun and enjoyable setting!
